A 5.1-magnitude quake rocked an area near the Nevada-California line that has experienced a recent surge of seismic activity.

The quake, at 3:32 p.m. Tuesday, was followed in the next 15 minutes by seven aftershocks from 2.5 to 4.3, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was in the ghost town of Candelaria, Nevada — 15 miles south of Mina and about 50 miles east of California's Mono Lake. It was within 15 miles of the epicenters of a 5.3 quake on Nov. 13 and a 6.5 quake on May 15 (indicated by orange dots on the map above).
