It's the non-Jewish Russian tradition to include the father's name after the first name. That's why Moshe's 'alter ego', the son of Reb Alexander Sander of Shklov, is referred to as 'Moshe Alexanderov', and also why Shneur Zalman himself took the surname 'Boruchovitch', after his father's name.
